Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nails. The fungus starts in the nail bed, below the nail and invades into the nail plate. Toenail fungus is very resistant to treatment and reinfection is common. There are many home remedies and over the counter treatments, but most are not very effective. In the past, the more effective medications have been very expensive, ranging frm $300-$800 for a course of treatment. These medications are now available in their generic form and are much more affordable. Terbinafine, the generic version of Lamisil® is available and a three month course of therapy will cost less than $100 at most pharmacies. Ciclopirox, the generic version of Penlac®, is an effective topical therapy. Ciclopirox needs to be applied to 3-6 months and depending on how many nails need to be treated, a course of therapy can cost between $50-$200.
